American pop star Katy Perry is set to take part in a six-member all-female spaceflight this spring, organized by Blue Origin, the space company owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos. The announcement was made on Thursday, as reported by AP and AFP.
The approximately ten-minute suborbital flight will launch from West Texas at a yet-to-be-specified date aboard the New Shepard rocket. Joining Katy Perry on this historic mission will be TV host Gayle King, Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sánchez, producer Kerianne Flynn, and scientists Aisha Bowe and Amanda Nguyen.
“Katy is honored to be part of Blue Origin’s first all-female crew and hopes that her journey will inspire her daughter and others to reach for the stars—literally and figuratively,” Blue Origin stated in an official release.
Blue Origin has been conducting short spaceflights since 2021. While some passengers have been invited by Bezos for free, others have had to pay tens of thousands of dollars for the experience. It remains unclear whether the high-profile members of this upcoming flight have financed their own journey.
The flight featuring Katy Perry will mark Blue Origin’s 11th mission. On its very first trip, Jeff Bezos himself flew alongside his brother. So far, the company has sent 52 people into suborbital space, which is approximately 100 kilometers above sea level.
